Pregnancy Q & A
How do I prepare for pregnancy?
If you want to get pregnant, there’s a lot you can to do prepare yourself in advance to optimize your health and increase your chances of having a healthy baby. The OB/GYNs at Park Avenue Women’s Center work with you to manage your medical conditions before pregnancy using an interdisciplinary approach, and can also provide:
- Preconception counseling and testing
- Genetic screening
- Dietary counseling
- Nutrition and exercise guidelines
What prenatal care do I need?
Once you receive your good news, your pregnancy advances quickly as your body changes to accommodate a growing fetus inside you. To make sure that you and your baby are healthy, the team at Park Avenue Women’s Center provides comprehensive prenatal care throughout your pregnancy to make sure important developmental milestones are met.
You should expect to see your obstetrician:
- Every 3-4 weeks up to week 30
- Twice a month between weeks 30-36
- Weekly after week 36
As part of your prenatal care, your OB/GYN also performs first, second, and third-trimester ultrasounds, allowing you periodic glimpses of your growing baby. The team at Park Avenue Women’s Center works closely with you to allow you to remain as active as possible throughout your pregnancy and maintain a healthy diet and have optimal weight gain.
If you have cultural concerns, rest assured that your OB/GYN provides culturally-sensitive and compassionate care, while also providing state-of-the-art obstetrical care.
What if my pregnancy is high risk?
A high-risk pregnancy is any pregnancy where there’s a greater health risk for either the mother or the baby. The team at Park Avenue Women’s Center specializes in high-risk pregnancies, including:
Advanced maternal age (age 35 and older at time of conception)
- Multiple pregnancies (twins and triplets)
- Diagnosis and management of gestational diabetes
- Pre-existing medical conditions like asthma, diabetes, ulcerative colitis, and Crohn’s disease
If you fall under any of these categories, your OB/GYN monitors you more closely, which allows them to intervene quickly, if necessary.
If you have a pre-existing medical condition, your OB/GYN works with your medical team to make sure your condition is well managed alongside your pregnancy.
What delivery options are there?
